Sustainability

Being sustainable means meeting the needs of the current generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In addition to natural resources, we need social and economic resources. Sustainability is not just about environmentalism. Thus, and attentive to the development of sustainable objectives, the University of Algarve is also concerned with social equity and economic development. The projects developed in the Algarve are a perfect example of this.

UAlg SDG Sustainability Report 2021

Since 2017, the Universidade of Algarve (UAlg) has formally assumed its contribution to the pursuit of United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, because only with concrete actions by the institutions and their members, at an individual and local level, the global sustainability of our planet will be achieved.

The UAlg Eco Bike project allows the UAlg's community to take and use bikes for free and temporarily.

In 2018, an internal campaign was launched by UAlg to sensitize the academic community to reduce the use of disposable plastic materials (for single use) based on the results of research carried out at UAlg Research Centers (CCMAR and CIMA) and on the strategy European “EC strategy-plastics-2018”.

The well-being of society, the protection of the environment and the fight against global changes that threaten life on earth are part of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals that cover several interconnected areas, such as the fight against poverty, equitable access to education and quality health services, the creation of decent jobs, energy and environmental sustainability, conservation and management of water and ocean quality.

The University of Algarve is a centre for the creation, transmission, and sharing of culture and humanistic, artistic, scientific, and technological knowledge, contributing to promoting culture and science in society, seeking to improve its capacity to anticipate and respond to social, scientific and technological changes in order to develop communities, particularly the Algarve region, striving for social cohesion, and promoting and consolidating the values of freedom and citizenship.
