Gender Equality Inclusivity Plan

The University of Algarve is a centre for the creation, transmission, and sharing of culture and humanistic, artistic, scientific, and technological knowledge, contributing to promoting culture and science in society, seeking to improve its capacity to anticipate and respond to social, scientific and technological changes in order to develop communities, particularly the Algarve region, striving for social cohesion, and promoting and consolidating the values of freedom and citizenship.

As a public service institution, the University of Algarve is involved in current issues relating to sustainability and the enhancement of natural resources and heritage. Cultivating a sustained involvement in environmental practices, the institution also takes a general interest in organisational and technological innovation geared towards creating better conditions for development and improved quality of life.

It is within this framework that the University of Algarve’s Gender Equality Inclusivity Plan (PI²Género UAlg) was drafted by a working group run by the institution’s Vice-rector for Internationalisation and Sustainable Development. PI²Género UAlg follows international guidelines on this matter, specifically those drafted by the European Institute for Gender Equality.

The actions put forwards aim to:

  • Build gender into UAlg’s institutional structure, ensuring the institution’s leadership, governing bodies, and management lead by example, seeking constant development in line with the most rigorous Portuguese and international standards
  • Strengthen an organisational culture that promotes gender equality and inclusion, encompassing formal and informal means of communication, and active and inclusive practices carried out both internally and externally (within the region)
  • Improve the work-life balance of all employees and students, by boosting wellbeing in a healthy environment
  • Mitigate gender imbalances in teaching and research, in areas such as Exact Sciences, Engineering, and Health Sciences, across UAlg’s regional, national, and international operations

This plan seeks to equip UAlg with an instrument with which to add new practices to existing ones, ultimately aiming to uphold its position as a tolerant, barrier-free institution that respects differences. In short, making our institution a good place to study, work, teach, and research, regardless of where we come from and who we are.
