Best Global Universities Rankings of the U.S News & World Report

Ranking analyses 13 indicators to rank the higher education institutions of 75 countries.

The eighth annual U.S News & World Report Best Global Universities Rankings was produced to provide insight into how universities compare globally. As an increasing number of students plan to enroll in universities outside their own country, the Best Global Universities rankings - which focus specifically on the academic research and reputation of schools in general rather than on their separate undergraduate or graduate programs - can help these applicants to accurately compare institutions around the world.

The Best Global Universities overall ranking encompasses 1750 top institutions, up from almost 1500 in the previous edition, and spread over more than 90 countries, up from 86 last year, 14 of these being Portuguese Higher Education Institutions (13 included in the ranking and 1 that did not meet the requirements to be ranked). The first step in producing these rankings, which are powered by Clarivate™, involved creating a set of 1849 universities that was used to rank the top 1750 schools.

This ranking is calculated using the 13 indicators, and their respective weights selected by U.S. News, to measure overall research performance. Each of the school profile pages on usnews.com lists the overall score as well as the numerical rankings for the 13 indicators, allowing students to compare where each school stands on each indicator. The indicators and their weightings in the ranking formula are listed in the table below:
